Félicien Rops (7 July 1833 – 23 August 1898) was a Belgian artist, known primarily as a printmaker in etching and aquatint. He is noted for his drawings depicting erotic and Satanic themes. Rops is furthermore important for being a pioneer in Belgian comics.
Rops was born in Namur, where he studied at the Fine Art Academy. In 1854 he moved to Brussels. The writings of Baudelaire influenced him and he embraced symbolism and romanticism. his work took on an erotic aspect. His early prints were mostly lithographs but he became expert at soft-ground etching (vernis-mous); he was much sought after as an illustrator of books.
